AS legislators vie to make Europe carbon neutral by 2050, they have at least one significant advantage: batteries which are made in the EU.
Europe is home to a battery manufacturing and recycling eco-system which includes a manufacturing base, some of the latest research and innovation and a highly skilled workforce. Europe’s battery industry employs 30,000 workers, with 20,000 across 15 member states employed directly by the lead battery industry.
And advanced lead batteries, as our Charge the Future campaign highlights, are powering the transition to a carbon free future.
We produce some of the most technologically advanced batteries in the world. And lead batteries collected in the EU are more than 99% per cent recycled at the end of their life, delivering on the principles of a circular economy now.
That is why we need to continue to nurture and support this battery renaissance – for the next generation of lead batteries as well as other important battery technologies.
Industry is already creating an innovation centre of excellence through the Consortium for Battery Innovation. In Europe we are enjoying a golden age of battery technologies – they are the key to achieving a truly low carbon future.
