Battery manufacturer FIAMM Energy Technology S.p.A (FIAMM) has secured a deal to supply its advanced flooded lead battery technology to power Ford’s start-stop vehicles.
‘Start-stop’ technology is one of the most cost-effective solutions to yield fuel savings and reduce CO2 emissions. Based on the technology behind ‘start-stop’ micro-hybrid vehicles, lead batteries are delivering up to 8% CO2 savings in a highly cost-effective manner.
FIAMM will supply ecoForce batteries from its Veronella plant in Italy.
“Advanced flooded batteries (AFB) are suitable for start-stop applications because they are better equipped to support electrical loads while the engine is off, and power deep cycling associated with frequent starts and stops.” said Paolo Perazzi, head of the mobility business at FIAMM.
By 2030 it is predicted that more than 80% of cars with an internal combustion engine sold in the EU will be hybrids. The new car sales market will be dominated by those using this technology. These advanced systems have the potential to eliminate millions of tons CO2 emissions without the need to drastically alter vehicle design.
